When I purchased the DJI Mini 2 I had portability in mind. With 4K camera capabilities and packed with smart features it was a no-brainer. As a commercial pilot, I believe in using the smallest drone for the job, and the Mini 2 was the perfect quad to join the family. However, my wife quickly commandeered this drone as an upgrade to her old Mavic Mini, and then she ordered pretty much every accessory available.

Some were hits, some not so much. If you’re the proud new owner of a DJI Mini 2 drone, you might be wondering which accessories you’re going to need to enhance your time in the air so let’s talk about some of the Best DJI Mini 2 accessories and how they work.

Some of the best DJI Mini 2 accessories include the Fly More Kit, launch pad, propeller guards, ND filters, landing gear, tablet holder, signal range extender, strobe lights, and backpack.

Let’s take a look at some of the best must-have accessories for your Mini 2.

Fly More Kit #

If you haven’t purchased the DJI Mini 2 yet and you’re wondering if the Fly More Combo is worth it to add to your purchase at checkout, trust me, it is. With the Fly More Combo, you will triple your time in the sky and gain the ability to charge your batteries on the go.

The DJI Fly More Combo Kit Includes: #

  • 2 extra Intelligent Flight Batteries: Each Mini 2 battery will get you up to 31 minutes of flight before the need to recharge. With the extra batteries in the Fly More Combo you’ll be able to stay in the air for up to 93 minutes.
  • A Mavic Mini 2 Car Charger: This comes in super handy when you want to recharge on the go.
  • Two way charging hub: This enables you to charge all three DJI Intelligent Flight Batteries automatically in sequence. Additionally, this charger can be used as a power bank so you can also recharge other gadgets on the go.
  • 2 extra pairs of propellers: These are included in the Fly More Kit so you’ll never be stuck should you need a quick change of propellers in between flights.
  • Propeller holder: Keeps your spare propellers tidily tucked away for when you need them.
  • Shoulder bag: so you can easily carry all your accessories wherever you go.

Landing pad #

A landing pad is one of the most common and useful accessories for your DJI Mini 2.  Most landing pads are lightweight and made of a waterproof nylon material that protects your drone from potential damage during takeoff and landing.

When the drone is turned on and the propeller blades are spinning, small debris on the ground like dust, pebbles, and grass can easily kick up and cause damage to your drone’s inner working parts such as the motor and camera gimbal. The landing pad prevents this backwash to protect the drone.

Landing pads commonly come in double-sided bright colors with reflective strips or optional lights that make your landing spot much more visible when operating your drone at night.

360-degree propeller guards  #

Drones are fun but can also be dangerous and cause serious injuries if an accident should occur. Prop guards are protective cages that snap over the drones’ propellers. When installed on the quad, the 360-degree prop guards fully prevent the drone’s spinning propellers from coming in contact with people and obstacles, preventing injuries.

Prop guards are particularly useful for beginner pilots or when flying indoors. They are not only a great safety feature to reduce the risk of injury, but also to protect your propellers from breaking if an accident does occur, like the time my wife flew the Mini 2 into a brick wall. After the short walk of shame to pick the quad up, we were relieved to discover there was no damage, not even a scratch on the props, thanks to the prop guards. All’s well that ends well.

There’s a downside though. If you’re just using the small stock case that your DJI came in, your drone will not fit into the case with the prop guards on, but you will have to snap them on and off each time you want to put your Mini 2 away in its case.

This can be a big hassle especially if you just want to transport the drone short distances to your next shooting location.  If you’re in a hurry to get that shot, you may find yourself not wanting to take the time to install the prop guards onto the drone, sacrificing safety. To solve this problem, you can purchase a bigger case or backpack for your done.

NOTE: It’s also worth mentioning that installing the prop guards to your drone will bring the weight limit over 250g while in the air which will require you to register your drone with the FAA if you haven’t already.

Landing gear #

Landing gear is another great feature for beginner pilots. Landing gear is a pair of plastic ‘feet’ that easily snaps onto the bottom of the drone. When installed on the drone, landing gear increases the distance between the drone and the ground which helps prevent any damage to the camera gimbal that can happen during takeoff and landing.

Landing gear provides added protection for your drone to keep the quad steady when launching the drone on uneven terrain, or when having to land in tall grass and other situations when a ‘hard landing’ can easily damage your delicate equipment and require a costly repair.

Cons: Like propeller guards, landing gear must be removed after each flight to store the drone back into the stock bag.

Also, with the landing gear attached, the weight of the drone will increase beyond 250 grams which will require you to register it with FAA, if you haven’t already.

Camera lens filters #

No two flights are the same in terms of lighting and weather conditions. Camera lens filters easily snap onto your camera and are essential in allowing you to capture quality aerial footage and images in all types of lighting situations.

ND filters restrict the amount of light entering the camera lens which results in a slowed down shutter speed. This helps to prevent unwanted reflections and sun glare from objects such as windows and bodies of water. Investing in a good set of ND filters will allow you to capture images that are sharp, and crystal clear no matter what time of day it is.

Phone/Tablet mount holder with neck lanyard #

Using your phone screen while flying your Mini 2 can be hard on the eyes, which is why a lot of pilots choose to upgrade the experience by attaching a tablet with a much bigger screen to the controller.

A tablet mount easily clamps to the DJI Mini 2 Controller to securely hold tablets up to 12” in size to create a single hand-held unit so you can control the drone from a larger screen for a better view of all the amazing shots you’re capturing.

Most tablet mount holders come with a neck lanyard which is super convenient when standing or walking and allows you to have hands-free moments without having to find a place to put your controller and tablet down where it could be damaged. With the lanyard attached, your expensive gear also stays safe against accidental drops.

Monitor sunshade hood #

We all know what it’s like to try and read what’s on your phone screen on a bright sunny day.  You find yourself cupping the screen with your hands in an attempt to create shade to escape the sun’s glare so you can see the screen. We’ve all done it. Not being able to see your screen clearly while flying a drone is not only a frustrating situation, but also dangerous.

A monitor sunshade hood is a perfect solution. The foldable sunshade comes in various sizes and easily snaps around your phone or tablet to block your screen from the sun and prevent reflections and glare, making it easier to have a clear view of what’s on the screen.

Range extender #

If you live in a city with a lot of signal interference, a range extender can effectively enhance the signal receiving range, which can increase the flying distance of the Mini 2.  The range extender is plug-and-go and simply slides over the antenna on the controller to provide a more stable signal to improve both remote control and Wi-Fi video connection performance.

NOTE: Remember to always keep your drone in visual line of sight**. **

Backpack  #

Drone gear is expensive, and lugging around multiple small bags to hold it all can put your equipment in danger of being broken, not to mention it’s a huge inconvenience.

A lightweight drone backpack is a must if you plan on hitting the trails or want to carry your Mini 2 and all its accessories in one convenient backpack-style bag while traveling. Drone backpacks are specially designed with movable padded compartments that can be easily customized to keep all your gear safe and protected all in one easy-to-carry bag.

Like drones, there are many good backpacks on the market to choose from. I’ve written a whole article on the matter where you can learn more about finding the perfect drone backpack for your Mavic Mini 2.

SD Memory Card #

There’s nothing more disappointing than being out filming some epic footage and discovering you’ve run out of storage space before the day is over. Unfortunately, the DJI Mini 2 doesn’t come with any internal built-in storage and 4K video takes up a lot of space.

To make matters worse, without installing a memory card in your drone, all your amazing footage will be stored directly on your phone in 720p which is a significantly lower resolution.

For the Mini 2, you will need a micro-SD memory card capable of recording 4K footage at 30fps. The SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 fits the bill and is the perfect SD card for your Mini 2 to hold all that awesome 4k footage so you don’t miss a moment.

Anti-collision strobe lights #

If you plan on taking your Mini 2 for some nighttime adventures, you’ll want to invest in a good LED strobe light that will enable you to see the drone better in the night sky. The built-in lights on the Mini 2 work ok but adding some rechargeable LED strobe lighting will greatly improve your visibility of the drone at night and make it easier to spot in the night sky.

Most strobe lights easily attach to your quad via double-sided Velcro-like tape, or with a rubber ring. Multi-function strobe lights can be set to various colors of steady or flashing lights and will enable you to see your drone at a much further distance away.

Final Thoughts #

The DJI Mini 2 is the perfect compact 4k drone, and with a few added accessories you can take your aerial photography to the next level to enhance your flying experience and provide maximum safety while in the air.
