In this article, I will show you how to fly your DJI Mini 2 in FPV mode with an inexpensive VR headset using both the DJI Fly app and Litchi.

We’ll also learn how to check if your device is compatible with VR, things to consider when buying a VR headset for your phone, how to enable FPV mode in the DJI Fly app, and a couple of step-by-step guides to get you flying your beloved Mini 2 in FPV mode.

Flying FPV #

You don’t need to invest hundreds of dollars in a VR headset for your phone, contrary to popular belief. You will not have the same experience with a low-cost device as you would with a higher-cost one, but they should all do the job just fine.

Flying an FPV racer and a stabilized drone with a VR headset are two very different experiences, due to the disparities in how we operate a racer and cinewhoops.

However, thanks to the ability to use these technologies in commercial drones, the way we enjoy flying from that perspective is remarkably similar.

Is my device compatible with VR headsets? #

You should check to see if your device supports this technology before purchasing one of these headsets. Here’s what you will need to do to find out:

• Check if your phone includes a feature called ‘gyroscope sensor’.
• Download the Google Cardboard app if you cannot find out if this function is accessible on your phone.
• If the app gets installed, that means that your phone is VR-ready.

Things to consider with a VR headset #

Buying a VR headset can be a huge headache. On Amazon alone, there are dozens of these products. They come with different features and price tags, from a few dollars to hundreds.

Luckily, as I said before, getting one of these to fly your drone is affordable for everyone.

These are the aspects you should consider when buying a VR headset for your drone:

• Lens: They must be of fine standards. Your eyes will become weary faster if the lens is of poor quality.
• Lens adjustment: Because everyone has a different viewing angle, the headset must provide an easy and quick option to change the lens settings.
• Phone size: For the VR headset, the size of your phone is important. These were designed with various phone sizes in mind, but you should double-check that your smartphone will fit.
• Heat ventilation: Because VR experiences need a large amount of processing power from your device, enclosing it in a box can rapidly cause it to overheat. As a result, the headset must have some ventilation.
• The head strap: You are going to be wearing a hefty object on your head for a long time. This experience will be enhanced if you have a good head strap. Aside from that, the lower the quality of the head strap, the shorter the headset’s lifespan.
• Price: For as low as $10, you can acquire a virtual reality headset for your phone, but in my experience, they only last a few weeks before failing and needing to be replaced. As a result, my recommendation is to pay a little more to get the greatest bang for your buck.

How to enable FPV mode on the DJI Mini 2 #

Before using your headset, you should enable the VR mode in DJI Fly. This is not a requirement, but if you activate this mode, the gimbal will follow the movement of the aircraft, giving you the racer flying experience that we talked about earlier.

To enable the FPV mode in DJI Fly, follow the following steps:

1. Open DJI Fly and tap on Go Fly.
2. When in ‘Camera View’, tap on the three dots located in the top-right corner.
3. In the setting, tap on the ‘control’ tab.
4. Look for ‘gimbal mode’ and select ‘FPV mode’.

How to fly FPV with your DJI Mini 2 (with DJI Fly app) #

Now that you have your headset and the DJI Fly app ready to fly your DJI Mini 2 in FPV mode, all you need to do is fly!

To do so, follow this step-by-step guide:

1. Turn on your remote controller.
2. Open DJI Fly and select FPV mode.
3. Using the USB Cable, connect the phone to the remote controller.
4. Turn on the drone.
5. Adjust the lens and the head strap so that you can see well and comfortably.
6. Configure any aircraft parameters before flying, as you won’t be able to do it once the phone is inside the headset (unless you have a Bluetooth controller to do that).
7. Tap on Go Fly.
8. Insert your phone into the VR headset.
9. Wear the headset.
10. Fly!

Flying in this manner has the advantage of bringing the screen closer to your eyes, allowing for a more immersive experience.

However, you will not get the traditional 3D sense associated with virtual reality. The reason behind this is that the drone has only one camera, and two are required to provide a complete 3D virtual reality experience. Hopefully in the not-too-distant future!

How to fly FPV with your DJI Mini 2 (with Litchi FPV mode) #

Thanks to the inclusion of the Mini 2 in DJI’s SDK (software development kit), now we can fly our favorite mini-drone using third-party apps.

One of the most popular is Litchi, and one of its many advantages is that it allows us to fly our Mini 2 in FPV mode with several options not available in the DJI Fly app.

Here is how to fly the Mini 2 in FPV mode using Litchi:

1. Turn on your remote controller.
2. Open the Litchi app.
3. Connect the remote controller to the device using the USB cable.
4. Turn on the aircraft.
5. Tweak any settings now, as once you are flying, you will not be able to do it.
6. On the top left corner of the screen, tap on the icon and select FPV mode.
7. When you are ready to fly, tap on the FPV goggles icon on the top right of the screen.
8. Insert your phone into the VR headset.
9. Adjust the lens and the head strap of the VR headset so you see well and feel comfortable.
10. Wear the headset and fly!

The difference between flying FPV with Litchi and DJI Fly is that Litchi aims to imitate the true 3D vision that we see in VR content. This is done by showing the camera view in two separate rectangles, one for each eye.

As previously stated, we can never achieve a true 3D VR experience with a drone that has only one camera, as two are required to have 3D vision (this is what we achieve by having two eyes!).

Litchi comes with a few interesting settings not present in the DJI Fly app, so they are unique to this app. These are:

• The possibility of controlling the aircraft’s heading with your head’s movements.
• The option of controlling the gimbal with your head.
• Select the gimbal speed while in FPV mode.

Apart from the settings, which are shown by tapping on the icon at the bottom of the screen, Litchi’s FPV mode shows some telemetry onscreen.

• Camera settings: ISO, shutter, aperture, and EV (exposure value).
• Altitude: Tells you the height of the drone in regards to the take-off point.
• Distance: Distance between the take-off point and the drone.
• Speed: The speed at which the drone is flying.
• Battery percentage: The remaining battery percentage.
