To fly a DJI drone, either with your smartphone connected to the remote controller or with the intelligent RC and a screen, you must have a specific DJI app to communicate with the drone, receive live images, and change settings.

Sometimes, things don’t go according to plan, and your DJI App may not work as expected.

We have created an ultimate guide to help you troubleshoot why your DJI app is not working and possible solutions.

DJI app not working #

DJI has created several apps to communicate with the drone from your mobile phone, such as DJI Fly and DJI GO 4.

You probably won’t be able to fly your DJI drone without such an app. If you do, you won’t see any live transmission, use any drone function, and enjoy the drone flying experience.

The most frequent causes of your DJI app not working are an outdated version, an old operating system, and your phone being under minimum requirements.

Most of these issues result from regular updates to the phone operating system or the DJI app. What works today well doesn’t mean it will also work tomorrow.

In nearly all cases, DJI is responsible for developing further updates to fix these issues and listening to customers with problems with their apps on different devices.

If you have the DJI RC or DJI RC Pro, those have an integrated screen with an operating system installed (Android) that already comes with a preinstalled DJI Fly app.

The chances for those apps not to work are slim, but it can happen.

DJI’s main priority is to support its remote controller products, such as the DJI RC and DJI RC Pro.

That’s why it would be rare for the DJI Fly app to have issues running on those controllers.

If you have to connect your mobile phone to the remote controller, your phone is responsible for receiving and transmitting data to the drone, and the DJI App may or may not function depending on many factors.

DJI app not working on Android #

First, let’s see if your DJI Fly app or DJI GO 4 is compatible with your Android phone.

According to the latest DJI information, the DJI Fly app is compatible with the following Android phones:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note20, Galaxy Note10+, Galaxy Note9
  • HUAWEI: Mate 40 Pro, Mate 30 Pro, HUAWEI P40 Pro, P30 Pro, P30
  • Xiaomi: Mi 11, Mi 10, Mi MIX 4
  • Other Android Phones: Redmi Note 10, OPPO Find X3, Reno 4, Vivo NEX 3, OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus 9, Pixel 6, 4, 3 XL, Honor 50 Pro

All the above mobile phones should have Android 6.0 or above installed.

DJI GO 4 should be compatible with also the following Android phones (on top of the ones compatible with the DJI Fly app):

  • Samsung: S9+, S9, S8+, S7, S7 Edge, S6, S6 Edge, Note 8
  • Huawei: P20 Pro, P20, P10 Plus, P10, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10, Mate 9 Pro, Mate 9, Mate 8
  • **Honor: **Honor 10, Honor 9
  • Other Android Phones: Google Pixel 2XL, OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5T, Vivo X20, Vivo X9, OPPO Find X, OPPO R15, OPPO R11, Mi Mix 2S, Mix 2, Mi 8, Mi 6, Redmi Note 5

DJI GO 4 will require the above devices to have an Android version of 5.0 or above.

If your device is not listed above and your DJI Fly or DJI GO 4 app does not work, freezes, and has different issues, the most likely reason is that your mobile phone is not compatible with these apps.

It doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to install the DJI Fly or DJI GO 4 apps on any devices other than the ones mentioned; it implies that DJI does not officially support them, and there’s a chance you will have issues.

Another thing to mention is that the phones compatible with the DJI Fly app require Android 6.0 and beyond to work, which will apply to the app version 1.7.0.

As writing this article, the latest app version is 1.10.6, which will require the Android operating system above version 7.0.

For DJI GO 4, the current version also supports Android phones with version 5.0 and above.

Another common issue with Android phones is that the app won’t install when downloading from Google Play, as this is not supported since 2021. There are solutions for this.

If you get the error “app not installed,” try downloading the APK for your Android device from the official website: DJI Fly App APK or DJI GO 4 APK.

An alternative is downloading the DJI app from the Galaxy Store (for Samsung phones).

In the meantime, let’s troubleshoot different issues for specific phones and see what else we can do to make the DJI app work.

DJI app not working on Samsung #

Last year, many Samsung phones had issues running the DJI Fly app, and DJI GO 4.

Although most of the problems with these apps, including compatibility and connectivity, have been resolved, if you still encounter problems with your Samsung mobile phone, let’s see what you can do.

First, check the above section to determine if your Samsung phone is compatible with DJI Fly or GO 4.

If not, you cannot do much, but DJI often adds more compatible phones to their DJI app list.

You can test with yet a different mobile device than the one you have and see if the issue is related to your Samsung mobile device.

The second thing is ensuring your Samsung phone runs the latest Android version.

Although earlier versions of Android may support DJI apps, there could be massive incompatibilities with freezing and crashing.

If you have installed the app and it randomly crashes when you try to run it, delete the app cache. For DJI Fly, go to Profile > Settings > Clear Cache.

There is no guarantee this will fix your issues with the DJI app, but it’s a start.

Also, allow all permission after starting your DJI app for the first time. If you block the app permissions, it may not function properly.

If you still can’t get it working after every attempt to install or run the DJI app on your Samsung phone, it’s a DJI issue. You’ll have to wait for your device to become compatible.

DJI Fly screen freezing on Samsung S21 and S22 Ultra #

The Samsung phones with the most issues with the DJI Fly app are the Samsung S21 Ultra and Samsung S22 Ultra.

Many drone pilots switched to using cheaper and earlier Android phones when the issues with S21 and S22 Ultra started to appear in the app.

One issue that could trigger such incompatibilities and freezes is updating your S21 or S22 Ultra to the latest Android version, making the app incompatible with these phones.

In this case, update them or delete the app from your Samsung phone and download the latest APK version from the official DJI website: DJI Fly App

A common issue with the S21 and S22 Ultra is when you try to record when flying the drone with the DJI Fly App and the screen freezes randomly or when trying to record with your drone camera.

This mainly affects Samsung phones with the Exynos processor. If this happens to you when you’re flying your drone, please don’t panic.

The return-to-home function should work as expected (as well as other functions), but you may not have a live image. Try to stop recording and see if you regain the live transmission on your Samsung phone.

You can drop the resolution and framerate as a temporary fix and see which one works.

The main issue comes with the DJI Fly app, which has to be updated to the latest version for bug fixes.

Note: As of this writing, please note that these two mobile phones are NOT fully compatible with the DJI Fly App, according to DJI. This is an issue that has to be solved by DJI.

The Samsung S21 (standard) is compatible with the DJI Fly app but not the Ultra version. The S22+ and Ultra are also not compatible.

The screen freezes on S21 and S22 Ultra can also be triggered when using the follow-me feature on your DJI drone, tracking objects, using waypoints, or performing other functions, on top of recording in high resolutions and framerate with your Samsung phone.

If nothing works and you cannot use your drone with your DJI Fly app, consider downloading and using a third-party app like Litchi.

DJI app not working on iPhone #

iPhones proved more reliable when using the DJI Fly app and DJI GO 4 with fewer compatibility issues than some Android phones.

However, there could be issues even with iPhones, and the most common is for the app to quit unexpectedly or freeze.

Are these apps compatible with your iPhone? Let’s take a look.

  • The DJI Fly App is compatible with ALL iPhones from iPhone 8 and newer; however, your iPhone must have iOS 11.0 or above.
  • The DJI GO 4 is compatible with a broader range of iPhones, from iPhone 6 and iPhone SE to newer; this App also officially supports several iPads.

If your iPhone is compatible with the DJI Fly app or DJI GO 4, follow these steps to see if it fixes your issue.

  • Update your iOS to the latest version. Older iPhones are restricted from updating to the latest iOS version because these won’t technically support that iOS.
  • Clear the app cache. Open the DJI Fly app and go to Profile > Settings > Clear Cache > Clear App Cache. On DJI GO 4, go to “Me” > tap the setting button from the top right corner > Clear Cache.
  • If your app doesn’t start or crashes when it starts, try deleting the DJI app and downloading again from the App Store. Alternatively, you can download the DJI Fly app or DJI GO 4 directly from the official website.
  • If all these issues are new after a DJI app update or iOS update, you can wait for a new update to fix these issues if rolling back to a previous version is not an option.
  • Lastly, if you have issues with any of these apps when you fly your drone, ensure that your DJI app, the drone, the battery, and the remote controller are all updated to the latest version.

Another common issue with several older iPhones is that the app freezes, mostly when the iPhone is out of resources to use the app.

Check that no background apps are running on your iPhone.

The most common DJI app problems #

Here is a list of the most common issues across DJI apps.

  • The app doesn’t install on a device: Your device is incompatible with the app, or you have restrictions that will not allow you to install the DJI app.
  • The app is installed but running poorly: You might be limited o resources, especially if you have a cheaper Android phone with many apps and programs installed (and running in the background).
  • The app was running fine but now has issues: The most probable cause is the app or an operating system update, which is a bug to be fixed by DJI.
  • Video signal losses when using Samsung Galaxy 21 or 22 Ultra: These phones are not officially supported by most DJI apps. If you lose the video signal when recording, decrease the resolution and framerate.
  • The app quits unexpectedly: This occurs because of incompatibilities with your mobile phone, either after an update or a conflict with another app.

The DJI Fly app – Problems and solutions #

The DJI Fly app operates with the Mavic 3 series, Mini 2 SE, Mini 3 series, DJI FPV, and Avata.

However, you can’t use these drones if the app stops working.

Freezes and failure after an Android update #

The DJI Fly app may fail to launch or crash and freeze after an app update on an Android device**.**

This is a common issue caused by a corrupted version of the app.

GAVINHR, a YouTuber, explains this in detail and has helped many drone pilots by listing all the DJI Fly app versions on his Google Drive.

If this happens to you, use his link to download and install the previous app version that used to work on your Android phone.

The DJI Fly app doesn’t work after an iOS update #

This issue is rarer, but when updating iOS, incompatibilities could arise with the DJI Fly app.

The app is currently stable with iOS 16.5.1, but not DJI Virtual Flight, which conflicted with all DJI Goggles after iOS update 16.4.

The same thing can happen at any time with the DJI Fly app.

You cannot do much, as you cannot officially roll back to an earlier version.

Still, it’s a good practice to wait for at least a couple of days before updating your iPhone to the newest iOS version and check the DJI forum for any complaints about the incompatibility of the DJI Fly app after the update.

The DJI Fly App doesn’t work on a newer phone #

DJI has to carefully make the DJI Fly app compatible with new phones from Apple and Android.

If the phone is not listed in the compatible list, it should be only a matter of time until DJI fixes this and makes this app compatible.

The DJI Fly app won’t install on an Android Device (APK) #

When you download the APK file from the official website or elsewhere for your Android device, you must install it manually.

If you haven’t set permissions to your mobile phone to install third-party apps, the DJI Fly app will fail to install.

You can manually install it by opening the file manager on your Android phone and going to downloads. Then tap on the APK and follow the directions to enable permissions to install unknown apps.

The DJI Fly app won’t install any firmware updates on my drone #

If you’re having a hard time updating firmware, follow these steps.

  1. Ensure your drone battery (as well as the remote controller) is sufficiently charged and has over 50 percent battery.
  2. Turn on your drone and remote controller.
  3. Ensure those are linked successfully.
  4. Check that you have a good internet connection to download the firmware. Use your home Wi-Fi connection, not 4G, to download and install the firmware.

If you still fail to download and install your drone firmware update via the DJI Fly app, the reason could be that the servers are down or in maintenance.

One alternative is to use the DJI Assistant 2 (or the right one for your drone), connect the drone to your computer, and update the firmware this way.

The DJI Fly app yaw rotation speed and smoothness settings aren’t saving #

In some instances, when you adjust your drone’s yaw rotation speed and smoothness, these settings aren’t saved.

With many drones and devices, the yaw rotation is set terribly from the factory and, many times, is too slow, particularly in cine mode. That makes the drone almost unusable for capturing cinematic content.

It appears this issue persists with some incompatible Android phones. The app is not optimized, which can cause the problem.

The first thing to do is use another device with DJI Fly app and see if this saves the yaw rotation setting.

If it does, then the issue is related to your mobile phone not being properly optimized. Only a DJI update could fix this.

DJI Fly app is not installing (Android 12 devices) #

The Android 12 was released in late 2021, and ever since pilots upgraded to this Android version, they have had problems with the DJI Fly app, which suddenly crashes upon opening.

If you recently updated your Android phone to Version 12, there are a few things you can do to get the DJI app running.

  • Go to Profile > Settings > Clear Cache > Clear App Cache.
  • If the DJI Fly app doesn’t open, try deleting it and reinstalling it as an APK (latest version) from the DJI website: DJI Fly app.
  • If still, this doesn’t work, update your Android phone past Version 12 or roll back to the previous version if possible, then reinstall the DJI Fly app.

A year ago, DJI released version 1.5.1 (2025) for the DJI Fly app, which also fixes the issues with Android 12.

I recommend watching the following video if you still have issues and updating to another Android version is impossible or if the latest DJI Fly app version has problems.

DJI Fly app is not responding or running too slow #

When your DJI Fly app is not responding after you open it or is running too slow, this has to do with your mobile phone not having enough resources available.

The DJI Fly app is not a resource-hungry app as many pilots think.

However, if you have a cheaper Android phone and the app is unresponsive, allocate resources to the app by closing all other programs on your phone and background tasks.

Another reason your app is running slow could be that your phone memory is full, which tends to affect resources allocated to a specific application, or you could have a virus on your Android device.

If nothing works, save all your files and perform a factory reset on your Android phone.

DJI Fly app connectivity issues #

There could be a few reasons why the DJI Fly app has connectivity issues with the remote controller or your drone.

If the phone does not connect to the remote controller when on, the cable could be damaged.

If you have a spare cable (or phone), try connecting those and see if it makes a difference.

If the phone with the DJI Fly app does connect to the controller, but you don’t receive an image from your drone, there are a few steps to troubleshoot this.

  1. Ensure your drone firmware, battery, and remote controller are up to date.
  2. Pair the devices successfully.
  3. If you got a new drone and this doesn’t connect with DJI Fly app, make sure the drone is compatible with this app and not with DJI GO or DJI GO 4.
  4. Do you have connectivity issues with your DJI Fly app after an app update? Empty the cache or revert to a previous DJI Fly app version that used to work well.
  5. If you have connectivity issues with your DJI Fly app after a drone crash or repair, it most likely has something to do with the drone’s hardware.

DJI Fly app black screen in the camera view #

Seeing a black screen in the camera view when trying to fly your drone with the DJI Fly app is another common issue, especially with some Android phones and app versions.

Many issues can cause this, from the firmware update on your drone, a DJI fly app update, Android 12 issues, and the common problems with Samsung Galaxy S21 and S22 Ultra we talked about earlier.

Let’s take these by one and see what we can do to help you restore the live image on your DJI Fly app.

  • If this issue happens with a Samsung Galaxy S21 and S22 Ultra, it’s because these phones are not compatible with the DJI Fly app.

Although you can install the app, one common issue is having a black screen when recording or using different functions.

Try to lower the recording resolution. Wait for these mobile phones to become compatible with the DJI Fly app. Alternatively, use Litchi.

  • If your app starts, but you don’t get a live image after updating to Android 12 or a software update, try to update the Android to a different version or install a compatible version of the DJI Fly app.

Another reason you can get a black screen is due to a firmware update.

You may be able to roll back to a previous firmware version using the correct DJI Assistant software on your computer. Connect the drone and roll back to an earlier version.

One more simple solution if you suddenly get a black screen instead of a live image is reinstalling the app or rolling back/updating to another version. Sometimes this can fix the issue.

  • If you manually adjust the shutter speed (for instance, to 1/8000), this is too short for any light to come through the camera sensor, making it appear like a black screen. Increase the shutter speed.
  • Connect the remote controller to the drone. This is yet another common issue where you see a black screen instead of a live image.

Did you know that the connection cable between your mobile phone and remote controller can be the culprit?

Please check that your cable is not damaged and that all the connector blades of the USB are present.

Notifications in the DJI Fly app appear and disappear too quickly #

In many scenarios with DJI Fly and DJI GO 4, some notifications disappear too quickly, not allowing enough time for the pilot to check what happened.

Short-time triggers mostly initiate this.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to extend the notification time, and although some notifications that are continuously active (e.g., high wind) remain there, if you often get short-timed notifications, here’s what you can do.

  • You can check your flight log for your drone after landing it and find out what reports you missed
  • Alternatively, record your mobile phone screen when flying, rewatch the video, pause on the notification frame, and see what it’s that about.

DJI Fly app won’t change ISO #

There’s either a bug or restriction from the DJI Fly app where for some reason, you cannot manually adjust the ISO, although you are able to change all the other camera settings manually.

This happens in particular if your camera is set to shoot in D-Log and you have the Color Display Assist option activated.

Once you disable the Color Display Assist, you should be able to adjust the ISO manually.

If this doesn’t work, switch to Normal Mode from D-Log and see if you can adjust the ISO.

The above solution should solve the ISO problem. However, if it doesn’t work, reset the camera settings in DJI Fly.

DJI GO 4 App – Problems and their solutions #

The DJI GO 4 app is used for some older versions of drones but is still supported by DJI with regular updates, optimization, and support.

However, same as with the DJI Fly app, DJI GO 4 may have issues. Let’s review them and their fixes.

The DJI GO 4 App crashes and freezes after updating mobile phone #

After updating the phone operating system, whether Android or iPhone, you may have incompatibilities between the new OS version and the DJI GO 4 app.

In this scenario, you can only use another (non-updated mobile device) with the app or wait for another version release, which may take a while.

In the meantime, look for third-party apps to replace DJI GO 4 as a temporary alternative until DJI solves the current issue.

The DJI GO 4 App crashes and freezes after updating the application #

There’s an incompatibility between the app and the operating system, or the DJI GO 4 app has bugs after the update.

You can downgrade by installing an earlier version of the APK on Android.

DJI GO 4 app will not open #

DJI GO 4 may not open on different phone models, operating systems, or firmware versions.

Check if your operating system (either iOS or Android) is in the beta version.

During the beta, there could be major incompatibilities with DJI GO 4 app and any applications not updated to support that operating system version yet.

Also, if your operating system is below the recommended version or outdated, incompatibilities with DJI GO 4 could arise.

Please remember that not all phones are supported by this app, although DJI GO 4 has broader compatibility with phones.

If your phone is on the list of models not supported, the app may have issues functioning correctly or opening.

  • Another point is that DJI GO 4 may not open if it doesn’t have full access to the phone, including photos. Some pilots reported that allowing access to photos solved the issue.
  • If the above approach doesn’t work, reinstall DJI GO 4.

If DJI GO 4 worked before but, after updating, stopped working, downgrade the app to an earlier version.

DJI GO 4 app crashes during flight #

In some rarer circumstances, even if the app appears to work, it can crash when navigating through it on a flight.

This can cause you to lose the live transmission and telemetry of your DJI drone. This surely should respond to the return-to-home function, but still, your drone is flying blind.

What happens if your DJI app quits during a flight unexpectedly?

**In some scenarios (mainly on Android phones), when you have the DJI app open and flying the drone, other apps, pop-ups, notifications, and even calls can interfere with the basic functionality of the DJI app. **

If your DJI app crashes during a flight, put the phone on airplane mode to cut all notifications that could be inconvenient for the app.

The DJI 4 GO app is requesting more resources than your phone has #

Although DJI apps don’t require many resources, running stuff in the background of your phone, recording the screen, and other things that eat resources, reduce RAM and CPU.

Remember that when you’re flying, you have a live transmission and other functions requiring the app to have more resources to run correctly.

DJI Mimo does not work on Android 12 #

Like many DJI apps, the DJI Mimo suffers from the wrath of Android 12.

Update your phone past version 12 or follow the video below (starts at DJI Mimo) to install a version that works on Android 12.

Check if your version of DJI Mimo is compatible with your mobile phone and update DJI Mimo to the latest version.

Your mobile phone might not be supported. If it is supported, you may have an outdated app version that prevents it from opening.

For both scenarios, you can follow this link to DJI Mimo app on DJI and see if your phone is listed there as supported.

If it is, update the DJI Mimo to the latest version.

DJI Mimo stopped working after updating the app or phone operating system #

Mimo is not immune to incompatibilities between your mobile phone operating system and the app.

If DJI Mimo stopped working after you updated it, perform a downgrade.

If the issue appears after updating Android or iOS, you can’t easily downgrade those. You should wait for an update from DJI or use any third-party apps available.

Will DJI solve DJI app issues? #

DJI updates its apps to be fully compatible and work without issues, but this could take a long time.

For example, since the releases of Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra, DJI hasn’t optimized their apps with those phones, making many DJI pilots switch to third-party apps.

If you have issues with any DJI app, follow the advice in this article.

If nothing works, there’s not much you can do but wait for a new update on the DJI app or temporarily switch to third-party apps.
