One of DJI’s latest creations, unveiled in February 2023, the Mini 2 SE is a small, lightweight drone that flies for over 30 minutes, offers Intelligent Flight Modes, has Level 5 wind resistance, and can transmit video up to 10 kilometers away.

It does all this through its battery, but what is this battery? What do you need to know about it before purchasing and using it with the Mini 2 SE?

The DJI Mini 2 SE uses the Mini 2 Intelligent Flight Battery, a lightweight battery that includes the DJI Intelligent Battery Management System. The battery takes about 90 minutes to fully charge.

What battery does the DJI Mini 2 SE have? #

The DJI Mini 2 SE uses the Mini 2 Intelligent Flight Battery. As the name suggests, DJI created this battery for the original Mini 2, released in late 2020.

The battery is lightweight and streamlined for easy transportation. You can carry several of these batteries with you for a long day of flying the Mini 2 SE, such as for a professional project.

Each Mini 2 Intelligent Flight Battery promises 31 minutes of flight time in ambient conditions.

You might get just under 30 minutes, as that’s only the advertised time, but it’s still a good amount of time for a drone released in 2023.

Can you use other batteries for the DJI Mini 2 SE? #

DJI designs each drone in its product line to work with specific accessories, batteries among them. In some cases, batteries work with more than one drone, as is the case with the DJI Mini 2 and Mini 2 SE.

While you might find third-party batteries that claim to be compatible with the Mini 2 SE, I would advise you against using them.

Charging your drone with a non-DJI charger or inserting a non-DJI battery carries many risks. You can never be 100 percent certain of the compatibility until you use the third-party device.

If the battery overheats, explodes, or causes any issue with the Mini 2 SE (such as getting stuck), you can’t go to DJI and request assistance, even if your drone is covered under warranty.

DJI’s warranties only protect users against craftsmanship errors, not user errors like charging with a third-party battery. If your drone incurs damage, you’d have to pay for the replacement yourself.

The Mini 2 SE is one of DJI’s most reasonably priced consumer drones yet, but it’s the principle of the matter. Why shell out $300+ if you don’t have to?

How to charge the DJI Mini 2 SE battery #

You’ve got your Mini 2 Intelligent Flight Battery, and you’re ready to charge it up ahead of flying your Mini 2 SE. How do you do it?

Here are the instructions to follow.

Step 1: Insert the Mini 2 Intelligent Flight Battery into the Mini 2 SE. You will see a slot for the battery at the back battery port. When you insert the battery correctly, it should audibly click.
Step 2: Put the battery port flap over the battery port. It should also click when it’s secured into place.
Step 3: Plug a Type-C charging cable into the DJI Battery Charging Hub or the Mini 2 SE.
Step 4: Allow at least 90 minutes for the battery to charge.
Step 5: When your battery has charged, disconnect it from the Type-C charging cable.
Step 6: If you charged your Intelligent Flight Battery in the DJI Battery Charging Hub, remove it from the Charging Hub and insert the battery into the Mini 2 SE.

My battery blinks fast when charging (Battery protection mechanism) #

The Intelligent Flight Battery includes LED light indicators that tell you how far the battery charging has progressed.

The lights should gradually illuminate to represent your charging progress, but that may not be the case in some instances.

For example, the battery lights might flash quickly when you charge the battery. This is abnormal behavior.

Fortunately, since the Mini 2 SE Intelligent Flight Battery is so, well, intelligent, you can tell what’s wrong with it judging by which of the four LED lights blink and their pattern.

Here’s an overview.

If all four LED lights blink three times a second, the Intelligent Flight Battery is damaged.
If only the fourth LED light blinks three times a second, the Intelligent Flight Battery is charging at an excessively high temperature.
If only the fourth LED light blinks two times a second, the Intelligent Flight Battery is charging at an excessively low temperature.
If only the third LED light blinks three times a second, the Intelligent Flight Battery’s over-voltage charger is active, so a voltage issue is likely.
If only the third LED light blinks two times a second, the Intelligent Flight Battery is overcharged, likely due to a high battery voltage.
If only the second LED light blinks three times a second, an internal communication error has occurred. Alternatively, this light pattern can represent a short circuit.
If only the second LED light blinks two times a second, the Intelligent Flight Battery has detected an overcurrent issue.

So, the question becomes, now what? Depending on the issue, here are the fixes.

Battery damage #

If your Mini 2 SE’s battery is indicating it’s damaged by blinking four LED lights three times a second, you should send the battery to DJI.

Complete an Online Repair Request when you return the battery. When DJI receives the battery, its professionals will inspect and repair it if possible. If not, they’ll replace it and send it back to you.

Whether you’ll incur charges for the repairs and replacements depends on whether you have an active DJI warranty or the DJI Care Refresh service.

The latter protects against natural wear, which this issue should be categorized as.

Once DJI receives your Mini 2 SE battery, please allow five to seven business days for the DJI team to repair it. Check your email inbox, as DJI will keep you abreast of the battery’s progress once it arrives at their facilities.

Battery won’t charge #

If your battery doesn’t charge, you won’t see any LED lights when you plug in the Mini 2 Intelligent Flight Battery to the Type-C charging cable.

Whether you charge via the DJI Battery Charging Hub or the Mini 2 SE shouldn’t matter.

If the battery will not charge, you must send your battery to DJI per the instructions above.

No battery indicator lights #

What if none of the four LED lights illuminate when charging the Intelligent Flight Battery?

Your battery will likely not charge, and if it does, you cannot review its charging progress because of the lack of light indicators.

This is yet a third situation where you should contact DJI support and send your drone battery to them for a repair or replacement.

Charging temperature issues #

DJI recommends charging the Mini 2 Intelligent Flight battery at 5 to 40 degrees Celsius or 41 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once you exceed or drop below ambient temperatures, the battery charging behavior can become erratic.

If you’re charging in a colder environment, insert the battery into the Mini 2 SE, turn the drone on, and allow the battery at least five minutes to warm up.

You can charge the battery in the drone or the DJI Battery Charging Hub from there.

When the battery becomes hot during use, do not charge it immediately after. Handling the battery when it’s hot can cause burns, so give it 10 or more minutes to cool down, then charge it.

Battery voltage issues #

If your third LED light blinks two times a second, that’s indicative of high battery voltage. You’re likely overcharging the battery, so begin discharging the battery to one percent before charging.

Here’s how it’s done. Put the Intelligent Flight Battery into the Mini 2 SE, turn on the drone, and allow the battery some time to discharge.

That should solve most battery voltage woes, but if it doesn’t, you should contact DJI support. More than likely, DJI will advise you to send the battery in for an inspection and possible repair or replacement.

Internal communication error #

When the second LED light blinks three times a second, that represents an internal communication error and/or short circuit.

Beginning with the internal communication error, there’s not much you can do here.

You can always leave the battery and try to charge it again later, but if you get the same error the next time, that’s a clear sign something is wrong.
