Holy Stone HS720E Battery (All You Need to Know)

The Holy Stone HS720E is a simple yet intuitive drone with surprisingly good features for its entry-level price in the drone hobby.
Like any drone, the HS720E has a Lipo battery to power its motors and make it fly.
But there’s little information about this battery.
So here we are, adding together everything we know, learned, researched, tested, and put in a single but complete article related to this drone’s battery.
What battery does Holy Stone HS720E use? #
The Holy Stone HS720E uses a 2-cell Li-Po battery that operates at 7.4 volts nominal charge, which is also the voltage recommended for long-term storage.
But the battery voltage will be more than that when fully charged and much less when empty.
Usually, such batteries can store a maximum capacity of 8.4 volts (4.2 per cell) and should be discharged to no less than 6.4 volts.
But don’t worry; this battery has overcharge and over-discharge protection that will stop you from pulling more current than your drone needs, so it won’t permanently damage the battery.
On the other hand, the capacity is 2800 mAh, which is a bit too little considering its weight of around 220 grams.
To put this into perspective, the DJI Mini 2 battery has the same 2-cell structure and a capacity of 2250mAh at a weight of 86 grams.

So, we can conclude that the HS720E battery has only 550mAh more charge than a similar Mini 2 or Mini 2 SE battery, but at the same time, it weighs two and half times more, which is less than ideal for weight and power efficiency.
Flying the HS720E with this battery will keep the drone in the air for a maximum of 23 minutes. But in reality, expect somewhere around 18 minutes of real flight time, depending on multiple factors such as wind, weather, temperature, and flight style.

Luckily, when you purchased the Holy Stone HS720E, you should have received two batteries with the drone.

Can you use other Holy Stone batteries? #
Usually, drone batteries are manufactured to be supported by one and only one specific drone because of the weight, design, power requirements, and many other factors.
But in this case, the 2S battery we’re talking about is cross-compatible with the Holy Stone HS720 and HS720E, which are two slightly different drones.
While you cannot use any other Holy Stone drone batteries with the HS720E, except for the aforementioned version, you can use 3rd party batteries.
Although not recommended by the manufacturer, there are 3rd party batteries widely compatible with the Holy Stone HS720E at much larger capacities, usually around 4700mAh.
This means that such batteries may offer you a major boost in flight time over the standard batteries.
But I definitely do not recommend you go with such 3rd-party lipo batteries for this drone instead of the original ones. It’s risky, and you cannot guarantee it will work well and not damage your drone due to a power fluctuation.
Always go with the original ones.

Does the HS720E battery have intelligent protection? #
Like with most GPS drones, we do have some basic intelligent protection with these batteries because Lipo is dangerous, and only FPV pilots with custom quads know the true nature of Lipo with zero intelligent protection.
These intelligent batteries **should have **overcharge and over-discharge protection, short circuit, and temperature protections.
But as the documentation behind this battery is poor, we cannot confirm 100% these perks. And believe me, intentionally short-circuiting the battery just to check if it has this protection is a bad idea.
However, knowing the battery’s behavior when charging or discharging it in flight, we do expect to have at least these perks.
The manufacturer also recommends NOT TO use a water-damaged battery. So, if you have crashed your HS720E in water, do not use the battery anymore.
We can easily conclude that this battery is not waterproof and may not have any intelligent function that’ll cut the circuit in contact with water to avoid damaging the battery.

How to charge a Holy Stone HS720E battery #
When you bought the HS720E, you should have received two batteries with the drone. This is a standard with the accessories you get when buying this drone.
On top of that, you should also have a charging hub that will be used to charge these Lipo batteries.
Note: The charger can charge ONLY the HS720E and HS720 batteries and does not work with any other battery models.
To charge these HS720E batteries, do as follows:
- Remove the battery from the drone. Simply push and hold the button at the back of the drone that locks the battery in, then pull it out.
- Open the lid from the charging hub to expose the pins.
- Place the discharged battery (and the other one, if needed) into the hub. It will support charging a maximum of two batteries.
- Connect the charging hub to a wall socket charger or power bank with the USB-C to USB-A cable provided.
- On the charger, you should have three LEDs. One red in the middle and two green on the side marked with I and II. Those are the battery’s numbers. If the green LED is blinking fast, the battery is charging.
Expect these batteries to take about 5 to 7 hours to fully charge.
I know it may be tempting to leave them to charge overnight, but we never recommend this approach due to the risk of fire caused by Lipo batteries.
So, if you plan to fly your HS720E anytime soon, take your time, plug the batteries in, and charge them when you are at home. Do not leave this process unattended.
Note that only one battery will charge at a time, and that battery will flash the green LED more rapidly. The other one will have a slow-blinking green LED, which means it is connected and waiting for the other battery to finish charging.

Holy Stone HS720E battery safety tips #
When dealing with Lipo batteries, whether we’re talking drone ones with safety features behind them or pure Lipo charging, there are a few safety tips we like to share for awareness of their danger.
Lipo batteries can cause blasting and scorching fires if they are misused.
So here’s what we want to share with you.
- When transporting the drone or battery via plane, place it in a Lipo fire safety bag and take it in the cabin with you. That’s mandatory per airline policies for safety reasons.
- If you notice at any time that the HS720E battery starts to swell, dispose of it safely immediately, but first, take it to a non-flammable area, preferably outside of your home.
- Never use any other charger than the one recommended for the HS720E battery.
- If you crash your drone and the battery is even slightly damaged, do not use or charge it anymore. Dispose of it safely, or it risks catching fire.
- If the battery degrades over time because of continued use, discharge it to zero and dispose of it safely. Never dispose of the battery fully charged.
- Always keep and transport your Lipo battery in a Lipo fire-safety bag.
- Do not use the HS720E battery anymore if it crashes into the water.
- Do not operate the drone with the battery outside of the recommended temperature range of 32° to 104°F or 0° to 40°C.
- Never leave the battery unattended when charging.
- After charging the battery, ensure you don’t use it immediately if it feels warm. Let it cool down before using it to avoid overheating. For the same reason, it is recommended to fly the drone soon after you start its motors, especially if flying in hot environments.
