How High Can DJI Avata Fly (Explained for Beginners)

The DJI Avata drone is a glorious FPV drone released by DJI in the summer of 2022, packing extraordinary features into a small case.

Taking into account the size or form factor, how high can DJI Avata fly?

Because of software restrictions, DJI Avata can fly up to 1640 ft (500m) altitude from the take-off point, but in most countries around the globe, the airspace regulations legally restrict us to a maximum of 400 ft (120m). Other factors may influence how high DJI Avata can fly.

In this article, we’ll look over more information regarding how high DJI Avata can fly and why there are restrictions in place.

How high can DJI Avata Fly – A detailed overview #

If you are a drone pilot, you probably know that a drone’s flight height is typically restricted to around 400 feet or 120m maximum altitude from the take-off point.

This is because generally, beyond that point, you enter the national airspace of the country you fly your DJI Avata or drone in general.

And flying a drone high enough where airplane and helicopter flights usually have routes is hazardous.

But some undeveloped countries may not have clear drone laws and regulations, and there you may be able to fly beyond this common 400 ft / 120m limit.

For this (and probably other) reason, DJI Avata has a maximum height altitude limitation of 1640 ft / 500 meters from the take-off point.

This applies to all DJI Avata flight modes.

But if there weren’t restrictions in place, how high could DJI Avata really fly?

In these scenarios, we could look at at least 3km in height until the battery depletes.

This would be advantageous because DJI Avata is an FPV drone that can free-fall in manual mode, so it wouldn’t have to descend (more will follow).

There were no software limitations in the past, and people could fly the drone between the clouds dangerously.

But today, we are restricted to flying the DJI Avata at a maximum of 1640 ft (500m) or 400 ft (120m) altitude from the take-off point.

In the above scenarios, we only discuss recreational/commercial use.

What is the maximum ascent speed of DJI Avata? #

In normal and sport modes, the maximum ascent (and, for that reason, descend) speed is 13.4mph (6 m/s or 21.6 km/h).

Both normal and sport modes have the same ascent speed. But what about manual mode?

In manual mode, the ascent speed of DJI Avata is equivalent to the drone’s maximum flight speed (unrestricted), which is 60.3 mph (97.2 km/h).

This will allow you to quickly accelerate the drone upward and reach the maximum legal flight altitude within seconds.

What is the maximum altitude DJI Avata can fly? #

According to DJI, Avata can take off from a maximum altitude of 16,400 ft (5,000m) above sea level. But why this limit?

At high altitudes, the atmospheric pressure becomes so low and the air so thin that the drones cannot generate enough lift to fly at all.

But up to that level where drones cannot fly, we will struggle a lot to keep the DJI Avata in the air, burning the battery much quicker, over forcing the motors, and possibly overheating other components.

This happens without considering high winds at around 5,000m or higher altitudes.

Is there any difference in how high DJI Avata can fly in Normal, Sport, and Manual Mode?

You will be able to reach higher altitudes in manual mode with DJI Avata because the acceleration is equivalent to drone speed rather than being limited to a maximum of 13.4mph.

Although burning through the battery quicker, we can reasonably assume that ascending faster will have more significant potential to reach a higher upper limit than being limited to a certain low speed.

The drone’s thrust will have the most impact on how high it can fly, hence the benefit of using the manual mode in this scenario.

What factors can influence how high DJI Avata can fly? #

Let’s presume for a second that legally, we are allowed (maybe in some parts of the world) to fly beyond 500m altitude with our DJI Avata, and DJI does not restrict us from doing so (plus, there’s no active airspace in that corner of the world).

  • Wind speeds and wind gusts are the main factors limiting how high DJI Avata can fly because once you reach higher altitudes, the drone will have difficulty remaining stable because of extreme wind speeds and wind gusts.

  • Temperature & humidity. Flying in hot and humid weather can negatively influence the performance of the DJI Avata drone and could limit how high you can fly the drone.

  • The take-off altitude significantly influences how high DJI Avata can fly. Taking off at higher altitudes with lower atmospheric pressure will overforce the motors and drain the battery quicker, ultimately achieving much less in height.

  • Flight styles do matter on how high you can fly the DJI Avata, and aggressive flight styles and acceleration will drain the battery extremely quickly.

  • Additional weight is contraindicated if you want to fly high with your DJI Avata. Each gram can matter in this case, and you should not add a GoPro, landing pads, or other accessories to the drone if you intend to fly high.

  • Propellers can influence how high DJI Avata can fly because any non-optimized 3rd party propellers can produce less kinetic energy with the same motor RPM than with the original propellers.

  • Battery levels. The number of battery cycles will influence how long DJI Avata can stay in the air, hence, how high it can fly.

  • The fact that DJI Avata is an FPV drone is the most significant factor in how high you can fly this drone (in manual mode) because you can drain nearly all of the battery ascending and enjoy a long free fall instead of descending the drone, which does not require much power, only to stabilize near the ground level.

Is there anything else to consider when flying DJI Avata high? #

  • The drone restrictions max altitude in place are mandatory and must be respected by every drone pilot around any country worldwide where these applies.Pilots get prosecuted all the time for not respecting these fundamental safety laws. Please, never fly your DJI Avata beyond the maximum altitude allowed by law.

  • Be aware of the existing airspace even if you fly your DJI Avata under the permitted upper limit. All the time, helicopters have a tendency to fly at low altitudes.

  • Set your DJI Avata to return to home altitude below the maximum permitted by law.

  • For safety reasons, we recommend limiting your DJI Avata to under 400ft/120m altitude from the DJI Goggles 2 settings to ensure you won’t go past that point intentionally.

  • DJI Avata, like any DJI drone, always keeps a detailed log, including the altitude of your flight. This can be used against you if you don’t follow the law.

  • Always check your country, state, or local drone laws on the maximum flight altitude. Some countries may have different restrictions regarding how high you can fly your drone.
