How to Update DJI Avata Firmware (Step-by-Step Guide)

Updating firmware is a monotonous, slow, and sometimes complicated process.

The good news is that DJI simplifies this process for all its drones, and the DJI Avata is no exception.

You can update the DJI Avata firmware in two ways, through the DJI Fly app, where you also update the Goggles and Remote Controller, o****r, if you want to update the drone only, using the Assistant 2 software.

In this article, we’ll guide you in updating firmware with the DJI Fly app and Assistant 2 software. Also, we’ll give you some considerations for a seamless process.

DJI Avata firmware update: DJI Fly app #

Unlike commercial or enterprise DJI drones, the Avata doesn’t need you to connect a mobile device that works as a camera view.

The reason is that this drone works with Goggles that show you the navigation. However, you can’t download software to install updates on the Goggles like the Fly app.

To update your firmware, connect the Goggles to a mobile device with the previously installed DJI Fly app.

Let’s dive into the steps to update your Avata, RC, and Goggles.

Step 1: Linking process #

Before you start the update, you must link your Avata, RC, and Goggles.

If you’re using the Goggles 2:

1. Quick-press and then hold down for two seconds the Avata power button. You’ll hear a beep meaning it is on. Now hold down the power button for four seconds. With a beeping sound, the Avata tells you it’s in pairing mode.
2. Quick-press and then hold down for two seconds the Remote Controller power button. You’ll hear a beep. Now hold down the power button for four seconds. With a beeping sound, the RC tells you it’s in pairing mode.
3. Connect your Goggles 2 to its battery with the dedicated cable.
4. Quick-press and hold the Goggles 2 battery power button down for two seconds. You’ll hear a beep.
5. Hold the pairing button inside the Goggles in the middle of the two lenses for four seconds. You’ll hear a beeping sound that tells you the Goggles 2 is in pairing mode.
6. They should all link together after some seconds.

When using the FPV Goggles V2:

1. Quick-press and then hold down the Avata power button. You’ll hear a beep. Now hold down the power button for the Avata to enter pairing mode.
2. Quick-press and then hold down the Remote Controller power button. You’ll hear a beep. Now hold down the power button for the RC to enter pairing mode.
3. Connect your FPV Goggles V2 to its battery with the dedicated cable.
4. With the Hex key, hold down the red button just below the power cable connection for four seconds. You’ll hear a beeping sound that tells you the FPV Goggles V2 is in pairing mode.
5. They should all link together after some seconds.

Step 2: Mobile device connection #

Now it’s time to add your mobile device to the party.

It happens that the linking process doesn’t complete. The reason is that there is a firmware update pending.

It’s always advisable to connect your mobile device to the Goggles to pair them.

That way, you’ll see a prompt in the Fly app to install the firmware update in the Avata, RC, and Goggles when needed.

The procedure to connect your device depends on its port.

If you use an Android device, it commonly comes with a USB-C port.

1. Connect your Android device to the Goggles battery with the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with your Avata.
2. Then open the DJI Fly app on your Android device.

If you use an iOS device:

1. Connect the lightning to USB-A cable of your iOS device to the USB-A to USB-C cable that comes with the Avata.
2. Now connect your iOS device.
3. Open the DJI Fly app on your iOS device.

Step 3: Firmware update #

Now, the Fly app displays a prompt to install the update. Press it, and the firmware update starts immediately.

This process delays up to 20 minutes depending on how heavy the update is.

We advise you not to touch the drone, RC, Goggles, and mobile device. Only check the mobile device screen to check if the firmware is updating.

DJI Avata firmware update: DJI Assistant 2 #

Let’s say you can’t access the Fly app due to an incompatible mobile device, or its battery died, and you don’t have its charger.

Maybe you don’t have a good Internet connection with your mobile device.

Then it makes sense to use the Assistant 2 software. You can connect most PCs via LAN cable so the Internet connection it’s steadier.

Also, Assistant 2 is a more potent software than the Fly app, working faster.

To update the firmware of your DJI Avata via DJI Assistant 2, you need to download the required software for each device.

Install it on your Windows or Mac computer and proceed as follows:

1. Launch the DJI Assistant 2.
2. Connect your device to your computer with the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with your Avata. If your computer doesn’t have a USB-C port, you need an adapter from USB-A to USB-C in a Windows computer or micro-USB to USB-C in Mac.
3. Now power on your device by quickly pressing and then holding down the power button for two seconds.
4. The Assistant 2 recognizes your device and appears as an option to select. Select the device you connected.
5. Assistant 2 immediately opens the firmware update tab for the device you connected.
6. On the right portion of the screen, under Action, you’ll see an UPGRADE, REFRESH, or DOWNGRADE button. Upgrade all your devices one by one by clicking the UPGRADE button.

The REFRESH button is helpful after a faulty installation.

For example, If you still can’t link your devices or an error prompt regarding the firmware update appears on the Goggles.

Considerations before updating DJI firmware #

A firmware update can fail for reasons out of our control, such as an error during the update.

Generally speaking, we neglect the following five considerations that will help us guarantee a successful firmware update.

Consideration # 1: Battery temperature #

Avoid a firmware update immediately after using your Avata, RC, or Goggles.

During a firmware update, the battery works and gets hot. After a flight, your Avata, RC, and Goggles battery is hot.

So when you update the firmware, the batteries will reach higher temperatures where they can’t continue with an update.

After a flight, shut down your Avata, RC, and Goggles. Let them rest for at least 10 minutes for their batteries to cool down.

Consideration # 2: Battery charge #

Another common factor we overestimate is the battery charge.

If the Avata, RC, or Goggles battery is below 50 percent, the update will surely fail. The reason is that firmware updates demand lots of battery output.

Confirm your batteries are at least 75 percent before updating the firmware.

Consideration # 3: Battery update #

You heard you should update your Avata firmware, but in reality, you’re updating its battery, not the drone.

You should update every Avata battery before using it.

DJI helps us make this process less tedious. After you update one Avata battery with the Fly app or Assistant 2, the drone keeps the file.

When installing on the Avata a non-updated battery, the Goggles will prompt a firmware update message. Select it, and that Avata battery firmware will start updating.

Consideration # 4: Internet connection #

Another influential factor is your Internet connection. More than its speed is how stable it is.

If the Internet connection crashes, you will have a faulty update or no update at all.

Ensure you perform a firmware update in a zone with stable Wi-Fi coverage when using the Fly app.

You can always connect your computer to an Internet modem via a LAN cable. Then you can update each device with the DJI Assistant 2.

Consideration # 5: Preferred settings #

Lastly, after an update, all settings refresh as factory settings.

So if you have preferred control sticks or camera settings, we advise you to write them down somewhere. That way, you avoid the frustration of losing those settings.
