Avata is the second drone of its kind released by DJI after the DJI FPV drone. But is Avata an FPV drone?

The DJI Avata is a Cinewhoop FPV drone that will allow you to fly full manual (acro) like any FPV drone. Avata also has Normal and Sport Modes, which is unique for an FPV drone.

There is much more information to share about DJI Avata being an FPV drone. Let’s get started!

What is an FPV drone, and why is DJI Avata one? #

FPV means first-person view. An FPV drone allows the pilot to see the live drone transmission via an FPV headset rather than on the screen of a phone.

This gives the pilot a unique perspective of what can be seen and how to control the drone.

There is often confusion about where FPV is considered by such pilots, but no, FPV is related to how the pilot perceives the image, and that’s via goggles.

Avata is the second type of FPV drone released by DJI after the success of the DJI FPV drone.

DJI created accessible FPV drones for consumers because before, flying FPV would mean learning a lot about these drones, how to build or repair them, pair them, fly them, charge the batteries, and so on.

But now, with DJI FPV and Avata, things got as simple as possible.

DJI Avata as an FPV drone – What do we need to know? #

Avata can fly in Normal, Sport, and Manual Modes.

An FPV drone flying acro is similar to flying in Manual Mode in Avata but without the “M mode attitude limit.

Hence Avata’s accurate note of being an FPV drone is not only in flying manually with the goggles but with zero restrictions and benefiting from the telemetric sensors, GPS and return to home, safety features, and long battery life.

I mentioned Avata being able to fly in Normal and Sport Modes. Is this typical for an FPV drone?

No, it is a unique approach by DJI where no other existing FPV drones can fly both in full acro modes and as regular drones but the Avata and DJI FPV.

That’s why Avata is currently the most accessible and straightforward way to fly FPV.

In Normal Mode (and Sport Mode, for that matter), Avata can fly and stabilize itself due to the internal sensing system, GPS module, and other features similar to a standard drone.

FPV pilots enjoy this drone and DJI FPV because you can also hover and fly smoothly in Normal Mode and see everything in detail.

An FPV drone is typically flown in full manual/acro mode where it cannot hover, the camera angle is fixed, and it’s difficult to land.

As an FPV drone, the Avata can also land as a normal drone, whereas in manual/acro mode is challenging, and you need experience to land it.

But what about DJI Avata being a Cinewhoop type of FPV drone? #

A Cinewhoop is when an FPV drone has duct guards around their motors and propellers, allowing the drone to fly safely between people and close to objects and–in the case of crashing–to minimize or eliminate the risk of damage.

A Cinewhoop drone such as the Avata comes with some disadvantages.

It’s known that FPV Cinewhoop drones are not able to fly freestyle. Well, you can, but at significant risk of flipping over and crashing due to a poor center of gravity, weak motor, and improper battery placement with the type of frame.

Is DJI Avata better than other FPV custom drones? #

Considering its features, and because it was made by DJI, which is proprietary of the Digital FPV VTX system in the FPV drone world, Avata may have some positive aspects and safety features that other FPV drones lack.

In general, many custom FPV drones will exceed in performance over the Avata.

This includes the frame structure, FPV drone aerodynamics, and overall performance. Avata has weak motors compared to a custom FPV drone.

Don’t get me wrong, Avata is a delicate drone and a fantastic way to get started flying FPV as a beginner, but to enjoy flying FPV to the largest extent, you need to look further.

We are glad that Avata is an FPV drone with many safety features and modes that benefit FPV beginners.

Will DJI continue to create FPV drones? #

After the first release of the DJI FPV, nobody expected Avata, although speculations about a new FPV drone due to the first one’s success were feeding the hopes of drone pilots.

Then the Avata came out. We do not officially have any information, but it is unlikely that the FPV drone series released by DJI will stop at Avata.

What else do we need to know about DJI Avata being an FPV drone? #

Avata is not a heavy FPV drone nor a light one. It is decent for an FPV drone.

The DJI Goggles 2 released with Avata are the latest and most performant FPV goggles at this time, wherewith Avata, you will benefit from the highest transmission quality of any FPV drones and goggles existent, and you can even use them with glasses. .

Just because Avata is an FPV drone created for safer flights around people and objects doesn’t mean you should do it. Common drone laws and regulations will apply here as there is no exclusion for Avata or any Cinewhoops.

As an FPV drone, DJI Avata has one excellent battery, and you can fly it typically two to three times longer than a standard FPV drone with a compatible battery.
