Why Is My Typhoon H Idling Speed High After Landing?
Table of Contents
The Yuneec Typhoon H drone has grown quite popular thanks to the amazing features it offers that are above its price range. Ever since its release in 2016, it has proven to be a great drone both for beginners and expert drone pilots. But despite the amazing features this drone offers, it can still have some issues, just like with any drone model.
One problem that some users have run into is that after landing, the idle speed of the motors can at times be too high. The idle speed is the speed at which the motors rotate while the drone is idling (not flying), and if this speed is too high, the drone may take off even if you don’t instruct it to do so. So, why is the idling speed of your drone high after landing?
The idling speed of your Typhoon H drone may be high due to firmware problems, a damaged controller, a misunderstanding or improper use of the throttle stick, or a miscalibrated accelerometer, ESC, or compass.
In this article, I will endeavor to cover any potential causes of your Typhoon H drone having a high idling speed after landing and much more in this article.
Why is my Typhoon H idling speed high after landing? #
As we have already noted, your drone’s idling speed is the speed at which the motors rotate while the drone is idle on the ground. We all know that if the motors spin fast enough, the drone will take off. But what happens when you land your drone and the motors still go on rotating at a fast speed?
You see, after landing a drone, you usually hold the left stick down (throttle), and this causes the motors to stop spinning. The idling speed is the speed at which the motors rotate before the drone shuts down completely.
Sometimes, after landing the drone, the motors may continue spinning despite holding the left stick on your controller down. In extreme cases, the speed at which these motors spin may make the drone start lifting back up into the air.
But what actually causes this phenomenon? Why is your Typhon H’s idling speed still high after landing? There are a few common culprits for this type of situation.
1. Firmware problems #
The firmware is at the heart of your drone’s operating system, and it is one of the most important components. Think of anything that your drone does, and it’s practically guaranteed that the command to do that thing was processed through the firmware.
All drone manufacturers advise their customers to update their drone’s firmware regularly since these updates are usually rolled out to fix any bugs that the current firmware may be having.
Unfortunately, sometimes the firmware upgrade can have issues of its own, which may create some problems for your drone. One such problem can be observed in the Yuneec Typhoon H drone. After landing your drone, you may observe that the idling speed seems higher than usual. This can be caused by a bug in the firmware installed on your drone, which causes the motors to spin faster after landing your drone. This may cause your drone to fly back up or even tilt over forwards.
If you’ve recently performed a firmware update and suddenly started having trouble with a fast idling speed, try reverting to the previous firmware, and wait for the next available update before upgrading your firmware.
2. Damaged controller #
At times, the reason for your drone’s idling speed being high after landing may be because your remote controller is damaged. Even a slight fall can seriously damage the internal components of your remote controller.
The left joystick on your remote controller is what controls the spinning of your drone’s motors. If this joystick is damaged or misaligned, it can cause the idling speed to be high after landing your drone.
If this is the case, you can try to realign the joysticks on the controller, or recalibrate it. In the worst-case scenario, you may have to get a new controller to fix the problem.
3. Mishandling the throttle stick #
When landing your drone, you should hold the throttle stick and pull it down until the motors slow down. One mistake many people make is releasing the throttle stick all of a sudden instead of releasing it slowly. If you don’t handle the throttle stick properly, the motors may spool up again and start spinning rapidly, thus making the idling speed high.
Try adjusting the way you are using the throttle stick to land the drone to be smoother and slower. Or try using the automatic landing feature to see if the idling speed problem persists after landing.
4. Miscalibrated accelerometer #
Calibrating sensors on a new drone can be a challenge if you are unfamiliar with them. One of the sensors on your drone that requires proper calibration is the accelerometer. The accelerometer is responsible for keeping your drone stable and balanced by regulating the speed of the drone’s motors.
If the accelerometer isn’t properly calibrated, the drone’s flight may become erratic. Not only this, but after landing your drone, the idling speed may be higher than usual. If this seems to be the issue, you can always try to recalibrate the accelerometer.
5. Miscalibrated compass #
For the most part, compass calibration is usually done to align the drone’s flight system with the Earth’s magnetic north. At times, however, a miscalibrated compass can cause a myriad of problems in your drone. One of these problems is your drone’s idling speed being higher than usual after landing.
In general, it’s a good idea to recalibrate your drone’s compass before each flight so that when your drone lands on the ground, the idling speed remains constant. Frequent compass calibration can also prevent lots of other types of flight and control issues as well.
6. Miscalibrated ESC #
Electronic Speed Controllers are responsible for spinning your drone’s motors at the speed requested by the controller. Calibrating your drone’s ESC involves teaching the ESC what range of throttle inputs to respond to.
If your drone’s ESC isn’t properly calibrated, even after landing your drone and pulling the throttle stick down, the idling speed may still be high because your drone’s motors will not respond to the instruction from your controller.
Check your owner’s manual for instructions on how to properly recalibrate the ESCs.
How to fix my Typhoon H’s high idling speed after landing? #
By way of recap, to fix your Typhoon H’s idling speed problems, follow these tips:
- Carry out frequent firmware updates. If you updated the firmware and that’s when you started to experience problems, it would be better to revert to the older firmware.
- If your controller is damaged and is responsible for the problems, you’ll have to get a new one for your drone and make sure that it is properly calibrated.
- When landing your drone, make sure you handle the left stick (throttle) of your controller with smooth, precise movements; otherwise, your drone’s motors will spool up again and begin spinning rapidly.
- Make sure that the accelerometer, ESC, and compass are properly calibrated at all times. Some people advise recalibrating them every time before you start flying your drone.
If you follow the above tips and your drone still continues to act up, you should contact Yuneec customer care, and they should be able to help you out. We are, however, hopeful that the tips in this article will solve the issue for you.
