Our lives have become increasingly dependent on drones. Filming, taking photos, delivering gifts, and much more are just a few things you can do with a drone.

Because of their usefulness in photography and videography, it’s a great idea to pack a drone when you travel.

If you happen to be traveling to Jordan, you may want to know if you can bring your drone along.

Yes, you can bring your drone with you to Jordan. But before you do, you must apply for approval for any intended flights from the CARC (Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission) at least 10 working days beforehand, and you must abide by all of the CARC’s flight regulations during your flights.

To avoid being penalized or having your drone confiscated, it’s crucial that you familiarize yourself with those rules. We will highlight some of them below.

Read on to learn what you should expect in Jordan and get a clear idea of how you are able to use your drone. We recommend that you know all those rules before your travel day.

Can I bring a drone to Jordan? #

It is possible to bring your drone with you when traveling to Jordan, but you have to go about it by the proper means.

Make sure to apply for approval for any flights from the CARC at least 10 business days before your trip. If you haven’t received a permit before your arrival, Jordan Customs will hold your drone at the airport on arrival for you to pick up when you depart.

You also must declare your drone when you go through customs. You should tell the authorities that you are bringing a drone to Jordan and have a copy of your permit on hand to show the customs officer.

Jordan offers countless exciting things you can do with your drone. For instance, you can take stunning pictures or videos of its cliff-carved city of Petra or exotic villages.

Be sure to follow the rules, no matter what you do.

Who can fly a recreational drone in Jordan? #

Getting permission before taking your drone to Jordan is essential, especially if you plan to use it recreationally. You will usually use a recreational drone for only personal interest and enjoyment.

As far as the rules are concerned, they are clearcut: The minimum age is 21, and if you have relevant training, it would be beneficial. You will also need insurance and to follow all the rules for flying a recreational drone.

These are the rules outlined by the CARC for drone flight in Jordan:

  • The maximum altitude of your recreational drone should be 121 meters above the ground, and the maximum distance of the drone from the operator should be 500 meters.

  • Ensure you keep a safe space from private property, and cars, and, most importantly, avoid harming people.

  • You can only fly your recreational drone for a maximum flight duration of three hours.

  • Drones should not be flown near airports.

  • Do not fly your drone in sensitive areas, such as near military bases.

Who can fly a commercial drone in Jordan? #

The same rules that apply to recreational drones in Jordan also apply to commercial drones. The minimum age to operate a drone is 21 years old. It would help if you observed the following rules:

  • Your commercial drone should never fly higher than 121 meters and no more than 500 meters away from the operator.

  • A three-hour flight duration is the maximum.

  • Drones should weigh less than 56 pounds and have electric motors.

  • Drones should not be flown near airports or other locations where aircraft are present.

  • It is crucial to ensure that your commercial drone does not endanger first responders or law enforcement.

Taking a drone through customs in Jordan #

How can you clear customs in Jordan with a drone? It is no different from taking a drone through most countries where it is legally permitted.

The first thing you need to do as a tourist in Jordan is to register your drone as a pilot. It generally takes at least ten working days for your flight application to be processed before you will be allowed to import your drone, so start the process before leaving for your trip.

Drones are accepted as checked baggage by Jordanian customs. It should be noted, however, that you cannot bring your drone in your carry-on luggage on any flight to Jordan as a traveler.

Customs officers will ask you to detach the lithium batteries from your drone if it is in your luggage. Alternatively, you can remove the batteries and carry them in your cabin baggage.

You can register your drone with Jordanian Civil Aviation pretty easily. All you need to do is fill out this online form, register your drone, and take it on your trip to Jordan. They will require crucial information and details from you.

I must also point out that you must be truthful when submitting information. This will help authorities to process your application faster, and you won’t be delayed.

To register, you’ll be required to have the following:

  • A copy of your passport
  • Proof of insurance
  • A copy of your training or qualifications. That can be anything from a license, school training, or flight logs.
