Both DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are the latest headsets released by DJI for FPV flight purposes.

But what are the differences and similarities between DJI Goggles 2 vs. FPV Goggles V2, and which may be better for your needs?

**DJI Goggles 2, released with DJI Avata, is a successor to the DJI FPV Goggles V2, released with the first DJI FPV Drone. Both headsets are part of the leading digital VTX market for FPV drones, and each has its advantages over the other and compatibilities with the DJI digital VTX products. **

Let’s take a look together at the differences and similarities between the DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2, which one may be more suitable for you, and why to choose one over the other.

DJI Goggles 2 vs. DJI FPV Goggles V2 – what do we know? #

DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are both headsets used to receive low-latency live feed transmitted by an FPV drone via the compatible digital video unit made by DJI.

The pilot then sees a live image from a drone in a uniquely immersive experience instead of displaying the image feed on the mobile phone or a screen.

The DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are used to receive images from FPV drones and DJI FPV products, such as the DJI FPV Drone and DJI Avata.

There is limited compatibility between these two headsets and standard DJI drones.

Because an entire industry is based on FPV, and DJI is leading on digital transmissions, both headsets are widely compatible with DJI VTX.

And although there are other digital headset receivers than these two mentioned, DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are the latest headset products and top in their class.

  • The DJI FPV Goggles V2 was released in January 2021, together with DJI FPV, the first FPV drone released by DJI.

  • DJI Goggles 2 was released in August 2022 alongside the DJI Avata.

Size & Weight #

When the DJI FPV Goggles V2 was released with the DJI FPV drone, it was expected to be an improvement over the first DJI FPV goggles, but it wasn’t.

It was around the same weight and structure and was considered bulky.

I got used to its size and weight, and for many FPV drone pilots, the size & weight wasn’t an issue, compared to improved performance over its predecessor.

The DJI FPV Goggles V2 weighs about 420 grams, and its size is around 202×126×110 mm with antennas attached.

In the meantime, we were surprised by a new FPV drone, a cinewhoop style, the DJI Avata. This was released with a fabulous new type of headset, the DJI Goggles 2.

The headsets are improved in aesthetics, weight, size, and portability compared to the older versions.

The DJI Goggles 2 weigh around 290 grams, 130 grams less than the DJI FPV Goggles V2. Its size is 196.69×103.90×104.61 mm with antennas unfolded.

Yes, that’s right, while DJI FPV Goggles V2 has detachable antennas, the DJI Goggles 2 have foldable antennas, a remarkable improvement for simplicity and portability.

To summarize the size & weight of both devices, let’s take a glimpse at the following table:

DJI Goggles 2 DJI FPV Goggles V2WeightApprox. 290 gApprox. 420 gDimensions(L-W-H)167×103×81 mm (antennas folded)196×103×104 mm (antennas unfolded)184×122×110 mm (antennas detached)202×126×110 mm (antennas attached)

Current compatibilities of DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 #

DJI, as a company, mainly focused on maximum compatibility between their headsets and digital video transmitters (VTX), ignoring any other 3rd party brands that are seeking compatibility of these headsets with many other VTX systems.

Both goggles have released firmware that unlocks backward compatibility with multiple DJI VTX, such as DJI Air Unit for FPV Systems, CaddX Vista, and older generations of air units.

DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 are compatible with multiple air units found in common drones; however, they are both mainly destined to be used in FPV systems.

It is common to find hardware compatibilities between these headsets and other DJI drone air units, such as DJI Mini 3 Pro, Mavic 3, and so on, but not software compatibilities.

DJI O3 and O3+ are the latest air units found in DJI drones – in DJI FPV Drone (O3) and, respectively, O3+ found in DJI Avata.

What about cross-compatibility?

  • DJI FPV Goggles V2 is fully compatible with DJI Avata
  • DJI Goggles 2 is hardware compatible with DJI FPV Drone

Video Transmission Range (maximum) #

Both headsets’ maximum video transmission range is theoretical, and many factors will impact the transmission range, the most critical being interference and line of sight.

The DJI FPV Goggles V2 has a maximum transmission range with O3/O3+ units of 10 km (FCC) and 6 km (CE/SRRC/MIC) – reflecting restrictive regulations in some countries.

The DJI Goggles 2, using the O3/O3+ units, should theoretically have a transmission range of 10 km (FCC), 2 km (CE), and 6 km (SRRC), according to DJI.

Different countries have different policies and regulations for flying drones and using a specific transmission power and frequency.

For instance, Japan, Russia, Israel, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan restrict the 5.8ghz transmission frequency, where only 2.4ghz can be used.

Please always check your country and territory policies, laws, and regulations about flying drones and transmission frequency and power allowed.

Screen size and resolution #

The first thing that comes to mind when comparing these two goggles is that we have improved visuals, screen size, and resolution on the DJI Goggles 2 because it is a successor and newer headset than the DJI FPV Goggles V2.

That is not the ultimate case.

DJI Goggles 2 has better resolution than the DJI FPV Goggles V2, but it also has a lower refresh rate and smaller screen size, making us think twice:

Are the DJI Goggles 2 improvements the ones we were looking for?

But to make a better comparison, let’s have a peek together at the following table, shall we?

FeatureDJI Goggles 2DJI FPV Goggles V2Screen Resolution(single screen)1920×10801440 x 810Refresh RateUp to 100 HzUp to 144 HzScreen Size(single screen)0.49-inch 2-inchMax Brightness700 nits360 nitsScreen typeMicro-OLEDLCD

It is to be expected that, indeed, the image quality of the DJI Goggles 2 should be superior to DJI FPV Goggles V2. Still, there are multiple factors to consider, not only the image quality.

Certainly, a massive advantage of DJI Goggles 2 over the older version DJI FPV Goggles V2 is the image brightness, where the new goggles have a maximum brightness of 700 nits, about double as compared to the FPV Goggles V2.

And another thing to consider is that the new DJI Goggles 2 has individual diopters adjustment but shares a similar interpupillary distance range with DJI FPV Goggles V2.

But overall, both headsets have excellent and leading image quality displayed, with advantages and disadvantages.

Batteries and power consumption #

DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 use the same battery system and the same Li-ion 2s battery

The battery is lightweight at about 122 grams with 18wh of energy.

Both headsets, the DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2, can be powered for approximately the same time, two hours, with the same battery.

Please remember that setting it on maximum brightness with the DJI Goggles 2 brighter display may reduce the battery running time.

DJI Goggles 2 vs. DJI FPV Goggles V2 – what else to know #

  • Both goggles have active cooling that will reduce moisture from inside the cup when you have them on your head and for the internal circuits to avoid overheating.

  • Remember that both DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2 require a lot of power and heat dispersion to capture such high-speed and low-latency transmissions from the FPV drones.

  • The DJI FPV Goggles V2 has the ability to attach and use an analog adapter for the goggles, allowing these headsets to have universal compatibilities both in terms of digital transmission and analog transmissions, perfect for FPV racing and more.

  • Many reviewers confirmed that the overall specs of DJI FPV Goggles V2 might be superior to the newer DJI Goggles 2.

  • The DJI Goggles 2 also has some new features, such as the ability to stream wirelessly via Wi-Fi that supports DLNA Protocol and head-tracking. These features are not available on the DJI FPV Goggles V2.

  • Both headset transmission bitrate is the same, with a 50Mbps bitrate.

  • The DJI FPV Goggles V2 can reach a latency of less than 28ms on 810p/120fps, whereas DJI Goggles 2 can achieve latency as low as 30ms on 1080p/100fps.

  • One more thing to mention: because the DJI FPV Goggles V2 is older, many more firmware updates have been released and may have better stability than the newer model.

You may want to choose the DJI FPV Goggles V2 over the DJI Goggles 2 when: #

  • You are looking for a larger image size and a higher refresh rate on your goggles.
