How to Remove the Battery from the DJI Avata

If you need to remove the DJI Avata battery for any reason, how do you do it?

To remove the DJI Avata battery, disconnect its power port from the drone, press the side buckles, and pull it from the Avata. It’s that simple.

This detailed guide has no rocket science steps, only handy information for taking the battery out of the Avata.

We’ll also explain the scenarios in which you must remove the battery. Let’s begin!

DJI Avata battery removal: Step-by-step #

When unboxing the Avata, you may notice the battery comes pre-installed.

DJI recommends charging it to 100 percent before the first use. To do that, you must remove the battery.

Removing it for the first time is intimidating. You’ll worry you might break something. I have had that fear, so I’ll give you the exact steps I follow to remove the Avata battery safely.

  1. Ensure the battery is off. Shut it down by holding the power button for two seconds.
  2. Find the T-inverted power port connected to the drone.
  3. Unplug the power port by pulling it from T wings.
  4. Now, find the side buckles and hold them down.
  5. Pull the battery backward gently.

Now you have completed the battery removal.

Battery removal scenarios #

But why must you remove the battery from the DJI Avata in the first place? There are several situations where removing the battery is mandatory and others where we advise you to.

Pre-flight checklist #

We always advise fully charging the battery of the drone before flying. That way, you secure the max flying time.

In the pre-flight checklist, DJI asks you to check that the battery is fully charged. You can do that in two ways.

  • Press its power button once. If all the LEDs light steadily green, the battery level is between 80 to 100%. This method doesn’t give you the exact value.

If you want to know your battery level more precisely, proceed as follows:

  1. After pairing the Avata with the Fly app, tap the Connection Guide, which you can locate in the right-bottom corner.
  2. Press the Camera view on the top-right corner.
  3. Tap the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
  4. On the Security tab, scroll down until finding the battery info option and tap it.
  5. Find the battery level. Remove the battery and charge it completely if it isn’t 100 percent.

Battery charging #

The only way to charge the Avata battery is by installing it in the battery adapter. So you must remove it from the drone first.

The reason is that the battery lacks a universal charging port. The battery connects via the power port to the adapter.

The adapter comes with a USB-C port you connect to a 30W/65W power adapter via a USB-C to USB-C cable. And finally, the power adapter to a wall outlet.

Battery maintenance #

You’re flying your DJI Avata and a maintenance requirement prompt pop-ups in the goggles.

Maintaining the battery requires charging it and letting it rest as follows:

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Wait for it to cool down to room temperature. This takes between 10 to 20 minutes.
  3. Fully charge your battery. Use a 65W power adapter to charge it in about 50 minutes.
  4. Once the battery LEDs emit no light, disconnect it.
  5. Store the battery for 24 hours in a cool and dry place.
  6. After 24 hours of rest, insert the battery into the Avata. Ensure you hear a click when inserting the battery.
  7. Let the drone hover at 6.6 feet until the battery is at 20 percent. The drone battery level is the first battery icon near the center in the goggles view.
  8. Rest the battery for six hours in a fresh dry place away from the sun.
  9. Charge it to completion.

Now the Intelligent Flight Battery is ready.

Battery replacement #

FPV drone batteries last between four and 10 minutes. Conversely, the Avata battery lasts up to 18 minutes in zero wind conditions at 40mph.

We all want more flying time from our FPVs. You should have at least two or three batteries to make this drone fly longer, as recording cinematics in 4K and 60FPS drains the battery faster.

To replace the drained battery, you must remove it, charge it, and install it again.

Although it sounds obvious, we tend to neglect that we shouldn’t charge the battery after using it in flight and let it rest until it cools down for at least 10 minutes. Depending on your power adapter, wait for it to completely charge between 50 and 90 minutes.

Battery Storage #

Another significant reason to remove the battery from the aircraft is to store it.

Avoid leaving the battery on the drone for more than a day. When the battery is in the drone compartment, it makes contact with the drone’s electrical connections and won’t auto-discharge.

The auto-discharging function is necessary to preserve battery life, as it can’t store its full energy for long periods.

When the battery doesn’t liberate that excess energy into the environment by heat, it over-cycles, reducing its life expectancy.

Always remove the battery from the Avata after use and leave it in a dry place.

Replacing the propeller guard or upper frame #

If the propeller guard or upper frame breaks due to crashing or excessive use, it’s time to replace them. The battery will have to come out in the interim.

When removing the propeller guard, spin the propellers to find a comfortable way to remove it. With the battery installed, the propellers can start even if you don’t power them up with the controller. A propeller is a sharp object that can cut you when spinning.

The drone’s upper frame helps to hold the battery in place. To remove it, you must flip the drone and remove some screws. If you don’t remove the battery, it can fall and break.

Update firmware with DJI Assistant 2 #

There are times when the Fly app doesn’t update the battery firmware. Then the only option we have is to use the DJI Assistant 2.

Connect the battery to your computer via USB-C. The DJI Avata has a USB-C port with the Assistant 2 software for firmware updates or activation. Then you can update the battery when connected to the drone.

However, if your battery is below 50 percent, it won’t update. So you need to remove it to charge it first before updating it.

As the battery lacks a USB-C port, another way is to remove it from the Avata and install it into the battery adapter. Then you can connect the battery adapter to your computer and use the Assistant 2.

We only advise using USB-C to USB-C cables as they provide the best transfer rates, so ensure your device has a built-in USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
